#AA Halloween Costume

Happy Friday Everyone!!!

I don’t know about you guys but I am beyond excited for this weekend. Today for work I decided to dress up as my all time favorite singer Selena. Every since I was six years old I would watch her movie every weekend. In the final scene when she sang I will be dreaming of you, I would always get emotional and cry.

As I grew up my appreciation for what she represented grew stronger. She was the first singer to represent a society where you have to balance being an American and being Mexican. So when I found out that MAC was doing a make up line dedicated to her I knew that I had to get my hands on them. My sister was so amazing and bought me all three for my birthday.

My costume cost $26 to make. I got my ruffled white shirt from Forever21 for 19.90 and I also got the gold hoop earring for $3.80. As for the leather jacket, I borrowed it from my boyfriend since it was the smallest jacket he owned. Now I just have to finish any final touches on my Scorpion costumes for Saturday. Guess that means I will be up late tonight.

Have fun and remember to stay safe.

love,

Erika

Work in Progress

Well there is something you must know about me…and that is that I love making my own costumes. When October arrives my first thought is what will I be this year.

I finally was able to go to a costume store with my boyfriend and brain stormed ideas. We agreed to be characters from the video game Mortal Combat. I had to do more research on the characters because honestly I have no idea who they are.

Since its a family party I don’t want to dress too risky. So I have been debating on being a girl version of Scorpion or Kitana. A part of me wants to be Scorpion because I am a Scorpio. But then on the other hand my boyfriend kept hinting that he wants me to be Kitana.

So today we are going to Joann’s to pick up some fabric. I’ll upload my sketch of how I plan on PG-ing this costume. I’m praying all my sewing skills can make this happen or else I will just be a ninja. But failure is not an option this Halloween. Can’t wait to show you how it all turns out! Here is an idea of what my boyfriend and I will look like.

Work appropriate costumes

When Halloween arrives I usually make two kinds of costume. The one that I wear at work and the other that I wear when I go out.

Even though I work at American Apparel I don’t really feel comfortable wearing certain things to work. Most girls don’t mind the cat calls or the stares but for me I don’t like that idea for work. Last year I was Wednesday Adams and everyone liked it. So as Halloween comes closer I like to narrow down my options on what I will be at work.

I know that many of you are on the same boat as I am so I decided to dedicate a post to work appropriate costumes.

Feliz Día de la Independencia!

independencia

Today marks a significant day in my culture.

It was the day that Mexico stood together and revolted against the Spaniards.  Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla  was the father of this whole movement. He gave a famous speech known as “Grito de Dolores, or Cry of Dolores”.  It became very powerful because Hidalgo was captured and executed right after he armed his people.  When Hidalgo was killed the people finally had enough of the Spanish rule and fault back . Mexico had won the battle and got back their country. So today Mexican’s all over the world celebrate the glory of victory.  The Mexican President every year go out to the balcony and yells, “Viva México! Viva la Independencia! Vivan los héroes!”  In Mexico they have all these festivals and many make their signiature dishes. It really is a celebration worth seeing.

So today to represent my culture and roots I decided to dress up. As far as my plans I guess I will just have to wait and see what I come up with. Hope you all have a great Friday!

Hello September!

YAY! It’s finally September!!!

Can you tell that I’m excited? Yesterday I was running an errand at Target and noticed all there Halloween stuff in the dollar section.

There was so much cute stuff I had to stop myself from getting overboard. I even got accepted for a Target credit card!! So I have to control myself from completely losing it at Target lol.

I got some window sticker to decorate my office and home. Today since it is the first day of September I decided to celebrate Halloween a month early. So far a few of my co-workers saw what I created and loved it.

Summer Soludos Ipanema Espadrilles

Every morning I go through my personal emails and read some articles. I always like staying up to date with everything and find out things that are trending. So yesterday I came across a really cool article.

The article I was reading was from Refinery 29. It talked about making this summer fun with a DIY project that can’t go wrong. The creators from Wool and the Gang  joined creative forces with the brand Soludos.

What you probably don’t know is that Wool and the Gang is a company that prides themselves with selling recycled wool. They are also such a unique company because they are all about teaching you how to make things yourself. Which to me sounds freaken amazing. Since I come from American Apparel I know how much that means to people. When I read their story on how they grew as a company I knew that I had to support them. “We’ve all done it, purchased low quality, cheap fast fashion made in factories abroad and wondered “how do they make it so cheap?” The reality is not good. There has to be a better way to produce, one that allows us to wear with pride and sleep soundly. So Wool and the Gang was born — pioneering fashion production that’s made in a sustainable way, bringing back knitting as a viable means of production for generations to come.” To read more about this company you can check them out in this link.

As for Soludos they are a well known brand known for their summer sandals. Once you go on their website you are going to want a pair of everything. So I had to stop that thought midway because of their prices. But the quality of the shoe is worth it.

So when I saw that the article mentioned that the price for these shoes are 45-55 dollars I went straight to their site. To my surprise the Wool and the Gang were sold out of all colors in my size. As I was accepting the fact that I missed my opportunity to get them I saw a note at the bottom of the website. It said that if they were sold out in your color to go to the Soludos website and check with them as well. Thank the universe that I saw that because they did have my size, well at least in black they did. I automatically pulled out my card and placed my order.

I can’t begin to tell you how excited I am to get them in the mail! I really want to make my own summer sandals. I promise once I get them you’ll be the first to know.

Hope the rest of your day goes great!

Erika
