Bye bye Christmas hello New Year!

Today everyone is returning back to work. Sadly my three day weekend went by so quickly. I did however enjoy every since minute of it. I loved that I was able to sleep in and enjoy the comfort of my warm bed.

Right before Christmas we were gifted a space heater so I was beyond excited about getting the luxury of having a warm home. The whole weekend I was just unwinding and treating myself to an at home spa experience. One of my co-workers gifted me a spa care package and it was definitely not wasted.

On Christmas Eve my boyfriend and I went to my grandmas house for our traditional tamales. This year my uncle was the one that got the masa ready (which is never easy). So inside of waiting until nine for them to by ready we all started eating around seven. We waited until midnight like always and exchanged gifts.

As for Christmas day we spent it with my boyfriends mom. We decided to go to Gen which is an all you can eat Korean BBQ place. You wouldn’t believe that we stayed their for about two hours just eating. Whenever we go there we make sure that we get our moneys worth and this time we definitely with above and beyond.

Then on Monday we decided to go to this amazing Guatemalan and Salvadorian restaurant that was less than five minutes away from our apartment. Since I’m half Guatemalan I was very curious to see what kind of food options they had there. My expectations were set very low but once I had a bite of their asada, pollo and chorizo my mind was blown. Everything was so delicious that both of us weren’t stopping at all. The flavors of the meat and the salsa complimented each other perfectly. We found each other mmming after every bite. After that experience we know that we will be back soon. My boyfriend joked that we might come back this week.

I hope you all had a great time enjoying your holiday vacation. Soon enough it will be Friday and the New Year will be here!

Friday Madness

 :

Now that Christmas is around the corner I can’t help but spend this week reflecting on how soon it will be 2017.

Apart of me is excited for a new year with new beginnings. But there is still some sadness of how fast this year went by. There are a lot of unresolved things that I need to tackle before I dive into the new year.

Some self reflecting I believe is needed in order for me to properly welcome 2017. Just yesterday at Target I realized how crazy people are getting over buying gifts. One man was starting to get aggressive with one of the employees just yelling and justifying his behavior towards another employee.

So many of us forget what the holidays represents and I hate to burst anyone’s bubble but its not a designer bag or an IPhone. It is simply being surrounded with the people that love you and of course some delicious food. One of my favorite memories when I was little was having all my cousins, aunts and uncles together at my grandma’s house. We would all wait until midnight to open our gifts.

Now we are lucky if one day out of the year we all see each other. Just as we get older our responsibilities change and many of us sadly have to work during the holidays. So if by chance we are all under the same roof that alone is just an amazing gift in itself.

I say this because if you decide to do some Christmas shopping this weekend or even during next week, please stay mindful of the employees. They are just like you and I, except they have to put up with this madness and crazy customers. So stay safe and mindful of others .

Love,

Erika

Monday Motivation

This weekend I got the chance to get away from the everyday and visit my hometown.

I love going back home and recharging myself. Something about a small town makes all the city problems just fade away.

Since I live in an apartment we aren’t really allowed any animals so I love getting the extra cuddle time with my cats and dog. Whenever I go, I have to make sure I visit everyone that I rarely get to see. One stop that I always make it a point to go and see is my grandma. She always makes me feel loved and missed. Everyone gets excited when I come into town and it feels like I never have enough time with them. I guess that’s why it’s always hard to say goodbye.

But the amount of love and happiness I receive when I visit my family and friends is so heart warming. It can honestly make all your problems completely disappear. No matter what stresses I have they always let me know that they are right next to me cheering me on.

So this weeks quote is all about leaving that negativity out of your everyday and embrace the positive.

Monday Motivation

I would say that this week’s theme is change.

Why is it the one thing that can help us in the most positive way is change. But yet we have this whole fear of it. Whether it is applying for a new job, getting married or moving to another city. No matter what, you have that hesitation to move forward with change.

This could be your butterfly moment. | Read more... http://artofabeautifullife.com/this-could-be-your-butterfly-moment/:

So I found that this quote to capture how to view change as a positive thing. I hope that it helps you ease into change as much as it will for me.

Monthly Detox

Do you ever start the month with the thought of a fresh start.

Well last month I was doing some research on gaining mental clarity. One article popped up that was really intriguing, it was called the 30-Day Minimalism Challenge. She created a calendar of things to do to keep you in a clear mind set.

I had to share it with you because I read the challenges and felt so inspired to follow her movement. So far I have managed to stay on top of each activity and it really has changed my mindset.

30-dayclosetconfidencechallenge

Another challenge that got my attention is the 30-Day Closet Confidence Challenge. The one thing that I always have a hard time doing is keeping my closet organize throughout the week. Since my closet is never organized, I always find it hard in the morning to get ready. I usually throw on a tee, sweater, and jeans. But as I kept reading the article it turned into a different challenge than I thought. Which was about developing confidence through your clothes. She gives you small assignments throughout the month that forces you to get creative with what is in your closet. So I felt why not join this challenge too.

I hope this inspires you as much as it did for me. Nothing sounds better then to detox your mind and start this month off on a fresh start.

Erika

Happy Birthday to Me!

ModernMeowSept

Today is not only my birthday but my friend Brittany too!!!

I can’t believe that today I turn twenty three years old. Yesterday my birthday Twin surprised me with a ticket to see a taping of The Voice. Amazingly I got to see Gwen Stefani, Alicia Keys and Adam Levine! They were so sweet and just as beautiful as I imagined. Alicia Keys was so loving when fans from the audience would yell out that they loved her she would just give the sweetest smile and mouthed I love you too.

We waited for almost three hours to get in and seat but it was an experience I will never forget. It was a perfect way to start off our birthday week.

I’m pretty excited to see what the week brings, I’m hoping that the universe sends me some luck.

It’s Finally October! Are you guys just as excited as I am!?!

This month is my birthday so like any other year I spend this whole month enjoying every single day. I plan on welcoming every day with a wonderful beginning by meditating.

Since the universe loves me so much I get to share my birthday with my friend Brittany, so I’m overjoyed that I get to spoil her.

Even though I live in California the fall weather hasn’t really caught up yet. So I’m looking forward to those cold fall days ahead. I know that this year has been the hardest for costume ideas so if you guys already know what you will be feel free to share. When Halloween comes closer I’ll share with you what I ended up deciding to dress up as.

So to welcome this amazing month here is the quote for the week!

Barneys, Bergdorf's, Bloomies, & Bendel's!:

Have a great Monday!

Self-Reflecting weekend

I'll think you back to any moment in time if you feel my heart if you feel alive its like we're back on the west coast making love like we're in hospitals:

Last Friday I got some shocking news from my sister.

One of the girls I went to high school with was in a horrible car accident. She was driving on the 210 merging to the 15 freeway and was hit by a dump truck that didn’t see her. As it tapped her car, it cause it to start spinning and flipped several times before she was ejected from the car.

It was such a heart breaking story because this girl; Faith Hawkins was such a beautiful person. She was the rare person who was beautiful inside and out. I had the pleasure of getting to know her through a musical play we were both in. She had such an amazing singing voice that I always felt that she was going to go places. Never did I think that this would ever happen to her. After reading that story, it really proved to me that you have to be alert at all times. You can’t always think that everyone is being a safe driver because things can just go wrong in a blink of an eye.

All weekend I thought about her and how unfair it was that she had to be taken away like that.  Her story really spoke to me in many different ways. It made me vow that I would be very careful whenever I get behind the wheel. To become more passive and in-tuned with my surroundings. But what inspired me from all this was the kind of person she was. Faith never judged anyone, she never felt like she was better than anyone. Every where she went she brought this energy that was warm and energetic. Whenever you were with her, you could help but smile or feel so overjoyed. She has truly inspired me to be that person. Since she is no longer here to keep it going I want to make a promise to her that I will strive to be as loving and caring as she was. To spread love and positivity where ever I go.

Everyone will deeply miss her and I send nothing but prayers to her family. I hope they find peace in these moments of sorrow.

The Power of Now chapter 1

Have you ever re-read a book and found a hidden message you overlooked.

Well as I was re-reading chapter one in this book I got so many messages. I thought to myself how did I not see this before? It is pretty simple, I wasn’t ready to see what answers lied in front of me.

So as I kept reading on I knew that this was the answer I was looking for. With each page I read I felt the need to go back and highlight passages that spoke to me.

Let us begin….

You are NOT you Mind.

The first thing the book talks about is how to separate you and your ego.

Ego is described by the author as, “false self, created by unconscious identification with the mind”. If you are like me, you over think and it can be extremely toxic. You create thoughts and problems that were never there. The book describes it as creating a false reality.

The longer you take to break that connection the harder it will be to identify you and your ego. The chapter ends with an exercise on how to observe yourself and how to learn to ignore egos thoughts.

After reading the first chapter I was drawn in and I couldn’t help continue reading. So next week I’ll post about the other chapter’s I have read.

Happy Hump Day!

This Weeks Lesson

Happy Friday!

I so happy that the end of this week finally came. I have been so stressed out trying to make sure I am on top of celebrating everyone’s birthday. This week and next week I have friends and family that have birthday’s back to back to each other.

This week it was my Dad’s birthday (2nd), Boyfriend’s (7th),  my friend Jesse (8th), my Mom (9th) and my bf Mom (10th). So that was pretty hectic! I’m so grateful that my Mom and boyfriend don’t mind sharing the same weekend.

With everyone sharing the same month it becomes overwhelming so this year I learned some new things. One being that it isn’t always about the amount of money you spend on someone but the amount of effort.

This year for my boyfriends birthday I decided to approach it with a different mentality. Since I love getting an amazing response from my gifts I always go big or go home. So as I was on Best Buy’s website, I was browsing their gaming section to see what new toy I can get him. Once I looked through all the pages of products I found myself seeing nothing that he would love. I was rattling my brain on what would be a great gift. Then it hit me, I wanted to give him multiple surprises. I wanted to surprise him in the morning, while he was at work and when he came home.

For his Morning surprise I put a note on the mirror that said Good Morning and to go to the kitchen for his surprise. In the kitchen I taped a sign that said surprise inside with a balloon to the fridge. Inside the fridge I made him a lunch from scratch with some fruit and beef jerky I got from Whole Foods. Right in front of his bagged lunch was a handmade card. I jotted down some things that I love about him and how much he means to me. My whole goal was to make sure that he started his day off right.

When I got to work I wanted to create a nice photo collage of him and all the photos we have together. So I wrote a sweet note and posted it on Facebook. He loved it so much and people were complementing me on how nice it looked.

Here is where the headache really started. So my plan was when I get home I have two hours to bake a cake and decorate while I’m waiting.

What I didn’t know was that baking a cake with coconut flour gets pretty tricky especially if you have never worked with it. I decided to be bold and make him a sugar- free, low carb cake. So as I was mixing all the ingredients together I started noticing that it was pretty thick and hard to stir. Before I started panicking I kept adding water and even skim milk  to the mixture to see if it changed. Well sadly it didn’t but I was running out of time and I said, ” F*** it I’m just going to put it in the oven.”

One task was taken care of, so now I had to tackle decorating. I had this idea for his last surprise to tape a note outside the door to go to the kitchen, that a surprise is waiting for him. I was going to make a balloon avalanche so when he open the kitchen door balloons were just going to fall on him. I was going to be inside waiting with a cake with candles and sing him happy birthday.

But of course things didn’t go as I imagined so I just had to adapt. I hung the streamers and began to blow up the balloons. Just to do a time check I text my bf to let me know when he is almost home and what did he respond with… 10 mins away. So the idea of an avalanche was thrown out the window.

I ended up placing the balloons on the floor, bed, couch and on his desk area. I took the cake out and started putting in the candles because clearly there wasn’t any time to wait for it to cool. So as he walked in and was surprised by the decoration I started to sing to him.

For his gift I got him a Pacific candle and massage oil from Whole Foods. He absolutely loved it and I was beyond relieved. I told him of my ideas of getting him something expensive and he said that I chose the perfect gift. After he opened his gift we went to Gen (Korean BBQ restaurant) and we had a feast since it was all you can eat.

At the end of the day everything fell into place and made it one for the books. It taught me not to get so invested in an idea because some times things don’t go as planned. Another thing it taught me is that the gift means more when it comes from a place of love instead of money. I think that’s why I fell in love with my bf because material things don’t mean anything to him he prefers love.

P.s. The cake I made was okay, I had some left over batter and the cupcakes saved the day. While the cake ended up in the trash. You live and you learn.
